Methanol in Beer Metabolizes in the Body to Formaldehyde, a Carcinogen. Methanol is known to break down into formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde has now been found to be a carcinogen increasing risk of pharyngeal cancers, blood cancers, lymphatic cancers, leukemia and Hodgkins disease. It is therefore reasonable to conclude that beer is a carcinogen leading to increased risk of these cancers. Because of the high exposure levels, a large number of cancers may be due to this cause. The solution is simple, evaporate the methanol out of beer.
